Tish here: Frances and I are in Portland Oregon today to play for a memorial service with Annette Bauer and Cléa Galhano. Marjorie Boyden, the mother and mother-in-law of our friends from the Oregon coast, Frank and Jane Boyden, died recently at the age of 97. She was an amazing woman, and wanted something different for her memorial service. She and her sons decided a concert was a good way to celebrate her life, and we four were honored to be asked to give this concert. We arrived yesterday to rehearse, will rehearse more soon, and the service will happen today at 3.
It's been interesting making a program to celebrate the life of a woman who worked for family planning in the 1930s, was a watercolor painter, was one of the best fly fishers in the world, purchased a mining claim in the remote Rogue River canyon in 1946 with all the money she had in the whole world (thanks to her sons for the notes), and raised three sons. The one we know is one of the best people we know, so she must have done a good job.
We're playing the introit and Kyrie from a requiem for Anne, Duchess of Brittany, the recorder trio by Paul Hindemith, Perotinian by Frances, movements from a Tango by Piazzolla, Machaut's Ma fin est mon commencement and a lament for Machaut by Andrieu, a ragtime by Adaline Shepherd, one of Debussy's Trois Chansons (Dieu! qu'il la fait bon regarder), and Agua e vinho by Egberto Gismonti, arranged by Peter Seibert for four recorders.
